Primary School Admissions September 2021

  • The first admissions round has now closed (deadline 15 January 2021) if you submitted your application during the first round you will receive your offer on 16 April 2021
  • If you have not applied, or want to change your preferences. You must submit a late application before the deadline of 2 May 2021. You will receive your offer on 18 May 2021.

Do you need to apply?

Primary

If your child was born between 1 September 2016 and 31 August 2017, and you live in Cambridgeshire you need to apply for Reception.

Junior school

If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014, lives in Cambridgeshire and attends an infant school, they will need to make an application to transfer to Year 3.

Middle school

If your child was born between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012, lives in Cambridgeshire and attends a first school, they will need to make an application to transfer to Year 5. 

In-year admissions (moving schools)

 An in-year admission is when you are applying for a school place outside of the ‘normal admissions rounds’. For all year groups Reception in year move or Y1 - Y6. 

(Normal admissions rounds are a statutory process where all parents/carers must apply for a place for their child to start school in the school’s 'year of entry' at Primary, or Secondary school).

  • An in-year admission could be a move between Cambridgeshire schools, or a move to a Cambridgeshire school from a school in a different county or country.
  • To apply for a place at a school outside of Cambridgeshire you will need to apply to the local authority of the new school.

When can I apply?

  • You can submit an application for a school place up to 30 school days before the intended start date.
  • Please allow 10 school days before you enquire about the progress or status of your application.
  • We will email your offer when it has been processed, we aim to process applications within 10 school days.
  • If we have not received a valid application, or the correct documentary evidence, we will contact you – this will delay your offer of a place.

Secondary  School Admissions September 2021

  • The first admissions round has now closed (deadline 31 October 2020) (Offers sent 1 March by email for online applications, or posted second class) View how places were allocated.
  • If you have not applied, or want to change your preferences. You must submit a late application before the deadline of 31 March 2021. You will receive your offer on 27 April 2021.

Do you need to apply?

If your child was born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 and you live in Cambridgeshire you will need to apply for a transfer from primary (year 6) to secondary school (year 7) for September 2021.

If your child was born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 and you live in Cambridgeshire and attend a middle school, you will need to apply for a transfer to upper school for September 2021. (Cambridgeshire does not have any Upper schools this is only for applying to other Local Authority Upper Schools).

Before you apply for a school place

  1. Check you are applying to the correct council. If you are a Cambridgeshire resident you will make your application through the Cambridgeshire Admissions Team, even if you want to apply for a school outside of Cambridgeshire.
  2. Research your options, understand what a catchment school is and how it affects your application and school transport. Look at admissions data, school's inspection results and performance data. 
  3. Make sure you read the 'First Steps' document. This will explain the application process from start to finish. The booklet also contains a list of all the Infant, Junior and Primary schools in the Cambridgeshire area, along with their allocation criteria.

 If your application is incomplete, or incorrect, it could get delayed, or cancelled. You will need to confirm you have read and understood the 'First Steps' document before submitting your application.

Processing your application and allocations

When we have received a valid application, along with the appropriate documentary evidence, we aim process your application within 10 school days and email your offer to you. If your application is incomplete, has errors or omissions, your application could be delayed. We will advise you of any issues using the email address registered in your Citizen Portal account.

  • Please allow 10 school days before you enquire about the progress or status of your application.

Accepting your offer for a school place

You will receive your offer by email and by letter (second class post). You can accept your offer through your Citizen Portal account that you used when you applied during round one, or contact the school.

  • You will need to accept the school place that has been offered within ten school days. If you do not want to accept the place please contact the school as soon as possible.
  • If your child’s name is on a school’s reserve list and a place becomes available, you will need to accept the place within five school days.
